Project Title:Augmentation of Results of Study of Groundwater Mounding Beneath Stormwater Infiltration Structures
Simulations will be completed in which the simulated infiltration rate from the recharge basin into the aquifer is adjusted to equal the simulated infiltration capacity of the soil. Previously completed pre- and post- processing programs and model input files will be used, and new model input files will be created as necessary. A subset of the variables simulated in the previous report will be excluded in the additional simulations because results from the previous study indicated the height and extent of the simulated groundwater mounds are not sensitive to variations of these variables.
Statement of Problem
In preparing guidelines for using the published USGS tables of simulation results, the NJDEP determined additional simulations are needed that include infiltration rates out of the recharge basins that are equivalent to the simulated infiltration capacity of the soil. Published simulations results are from simulations with infiltration rates that are less than the infiltration capacity of the soil, resulting in maximum simulated groundwater mound heights that are lower than would result using higher infiltration rates, equal to the soil infiltration capacity. Furthermore, simulations of developments larger than 10 acres are needed to extend the applicability of the results. Finally, comparison of the additional numerical simulations to analytical simulations is needed to provide a complete evaluation of applicability of the spreadsheet solving the analytical equation.
Strategy and Approach
Results from simulations using the model framework developed for SIR 2010-5102 will be summarized for: five values of soil permeability instead of two; one value of aquifer thickness instead of three; and five depths of basins. Furthermore, the simulations will be based on basin size and can be applied to a development of any area with a basin of that size. The study results will be presented in a brief USGS Scientific Investigations Report.
