Project Title:Mercury at Atlantic City Naval Air Station
The USACE desires to engage United States Geological Survey (USGS) for the purposes of technical review and regional subject-matter expert in regards to the fate and transport of mercury in all its forms for the purpose of aiding the USACE RI/FS effort. Not only in regards to mercury distribution and migration, but also local knowledge of both the USGS and New Jersey DEP studies. USGS will provide local first hand expert guidance and technical review on the current RI/FS efforts and potential future data collection. It is anticipated that USGS can also provide national, regional, and potentially Site level perspective in regards to determining appropriate background level concentrations and for revisions to the Site Conceptual Site Model as to the fate and transport of mercury in this environment. USGS may also be uniquely qualified to assist in evaluating and providing guidance in regards to both human health and ecological risk data issues related to mercury contamination in the Pine Barrens region of New Jersey.
Statement of Problem
Investigation and clean-up of U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) – related contamination at the Atlantic City Naval Air Station (Atlantic City NAS) located in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey is being conducted by Weston Solutions, Inc. as contractors for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). This property covers an area of approximately 5,000 acres approximately 10 miles northwest of Atlantic City, in Atlantic County, New Jersey and includes services such as the Atlantic City International Airport, a New Jersey Air National Guard station, the Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Lab, and extensive FAA facilities. Twenty-seven areas of concern (AOC) have currently been identified on this site. The focus of this USACE investigation is the potential identification of mercury source areas and the migration of mercury within Area U (Absecon Creek Watershed), which encompasses the north and south branches of the Absecon Creek (NBAC and SBAC, respectively), and the Upper and Lower Reservoirs of the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority (ACMUA), which serve as a water supply to Atlantic City, New Jersey proper. Remedial Investigation studies performed by FAA indicate that mercury is the main contaminant of concern at Area U; mercury has been detected in sediments of the SBAC, NBAC, Upper and Lower Reservoirs, and in surface water, floodplain soils, groundwater, and biota within the watershed. A previous FAA report (2005) concluded that the mercury impacts are related to the United States (U.S.) Navy’s former use of the site.
