Project Title: NJ165 Analysis of interactions between groundwater and surface-water in the Ramapo River
The objectives of the study are to develop a detailed understanding of groundwater and surface-water dynamics in the Ramapo Basin over a range of climatic and water-use conditions; to define the interdependencies and interactions between and among the groundwater system components and the surface-water system; and to determine the integrated-system response to current and future conditions.
Statement of Problem
Competition for new water allocations and efforts to protect existing diversion rights have become contentious issued in the Ramapo River Basin. The magnitude of this overall hydraulic stress and the interaction between the groundwater and surface water systems raises concerns about the availability of the water resources of the basin to meet current and future demands over a range of flow conditions. The proximity of existing and proposed well fields has raised concerns about well interference, reduced well yields, and induced infiltration from the river.
Strategy and Approach
The approach of the study involves evaluating groundwater conditions and constructing a groundwater flow model; evaluating surface-water conditions and constructing a surface-water flow model; coupling the two models at the stream-aquifer interface using a groundwater/surface-water model; and preparing a project report.
